What is Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS)?
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a condition that can affect trekkers at high altitudes, typically above 2,500 meters. Symptoms include headache, nausea, dizziness, and fatigue. While AMS is common, adopting preventative measures such as gradual acclimatization and staying hydrated can significantly reduce your risk. It’s crucial to listen to your body and communicate any discomfort to your guide immediately.
What are the symptoms of the AMS?
AMS symptoms usually appear above 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) and can range from mild to severe. Early recognition is key to effective management.
- Headache: Persistent, tension-like headache that doesn’t improve with painkillers.
- Nausea & Vomiting: Feeling sick or actual vomiting.
- Fatigue & Weakness: Unusual tiredness even without exertion.
- Dizziness: Light-headedness, especially when moving quickly.
- Shortness of Breath: Difficulty breathing, sometimes even at rest.
- Sleep Issues: Trouble falling or staying asleep, frequent waking.
- Loss of Appetite: Reduced hunger or inability to eat properly.
- Swelling: Puffiness in hands, feet, or face.

Accommodation before the climb is in a comfortable hotel in Terskol village.
How many days of hotel stay are included?
Five days in total—before and after the climb. During the expedition, we stay in mountain huts.
Where do we stay during the climb?
Huts equipped for mountaineering expeditions serve as accommodation during the climb.
What currency should we carry?
Euros and Russian Rubles are accepted. Carry both for caution money and unexpected expenses.
What kind of food is provided during the expedition?
Hearty, energy-rich meals with a mix of local Russian and international cuisine. Special dietary preferences, including vegetarian meals, can be arranged with prior notice. Hydration and snacks are also provided.
How is rescue and evacuation handled on Mt. Elbrus?
Local mountain rescue teams conduct evacuations using snowmobiles, sleds, or helicopters, depending on the severity and location. Helicopter evacuations are arranged for insured climbers through recognized rescue organizations.
What is mountaineering insurance?
